TRAVEL JOURNAL 2: LONDON
COME WITH ME ON A JOURNEY TO CLOSURE And explore a DAMN FINE CITY
I was enchanted by the city when I got there- it was raining of course. I dont think London should greet you any other way. I had gone there to visit a friend, but also for work as I worked for a company that was based there. A company that very unceremoniously released me from employment. That job was my life- I based my entire self worth on it. Foolish I know, but typical of a single millennial with no other attachments. I had been planning to start my own brand forever, but thought I’d stay on a few more years to properly save the capital to then go out on my own. I was a company man after all- I couldn’t just leave. That boot out the door was the kick in the ass I needed and so I put pen to paper and while I had the time I put the plans in motion to start my business before getting a new job.
I drafted logos and tested brand names and took classes at FIT. I made a business plan (that I’ve barely stuck to honestly) and sketched designs. Putting years of graphic design, advertising and marketing into use, it all collided with making patterns, days of sewing, and finding manufacturers. Pouring over fabrics afternoon after afternoon in the garment district a collection formed. It took a year to finally get the samples done and feel comfortable enough in my own sewing skills to sell a garment. My first collection was based on Greece, beloved to me from my first visit years ago, but in my time of unemployment it also became an escape from my grim reality in New York. My first collection reflected the breezy life I lived for just a moment on the islands in the Aegean Sea.
I DID NOT INTEND TO TAKE ON LONDON AS A INSPIRATION CITY… NOT YET.
In looking for fabrics for my second collection I was thinking of Rome or Ireland, but it wasn’t until I found a roll of the most beautiful blackwatch tartan that I knew- I have to do London. While originating in Scotland, the pattern is a staple in the Royal military and favored by King Charles. I also wanted to get into more tailored silhouettes and outerwear as well this season, furthering my unshakable feeling that London has to be the next collection locale. I just did not know if I could take on my feelings about ol‘ London towne while doing it.
A TRADITION IN TAILORING
London has a tailoring tradition that has spanned centuries. Now an epicenter of fashion, the tradition still lives on in the storied tailoring houses on Savile Row and Jermyn Street. The basement workrooms are the pulse that is keeping a dying artform alive in the ancient city.
I was lucky enough to be a part of that tradition in my own career, and it has a profound influence on me to this day. So much so that when I decided to add proper tailoring to Oak & Audubon I did so with a resolve to do it correctly and with care. But I wanted to maintain my point of view and expand the budding house codes established in my first Collection.
The city’s history in fashion and tailoring inspired the Bond St. Suit- a combination of a stand collar jacket and signature wide legged pants (or trousers as we are speaking the Queens English). The mod culture of London 60s fashion meets a more tailored version of our wide legged pants for a silhouette that is both modern and timeless.
Must see:
The v&a museum
I was incredibly lucky to visit the Victoria & Albert (commonly called the V&A) Museum while they were having the remarkable exhibition “Fashioning Masculinities”. An examination of not only menswear though the ages, but its relationship to sex and gender. Clearly impactful to me as a designer and my general approach to clothing and expression.
Beyond their amazing general collections, they currently they have exhibitions on the Golden Age of the Mughal Court, and a retrospective on Naomi Campbell’s career.
Tea & shopping
Perhaps THE English tradition- afternoon tea was an absolute must for me while I visited London. I knew I needed to look no further than Fortnum & Mason and their posh Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on the top level of the iconic store. Complete with a glass of champagne, I skipped lunch to fully indulge in their finger sandwiches, sweet delights, and scones. Reserve in advance and enjoy and pick up some biscuits on the way out!
I also had to stop into famed department store LIBERTY of London. I stocked up on their famously printed fabrics and perused their well curated selection of ready to wear and beauty products.
WEEKEND TRIP: OXFORD
A short train ride out of the city is the absolutely charming and historic Oxford. Home of course to the prestigious university, this town is as delightful as it is historic. Frequent bars that served Tolkien and touch buildings older than America itself. The history is palpable here- in every cobbled street, river canal, and limestone building. I particularly enjoyed one of the local gay pubs The Jolly Farmers with a back patio featuring a food truck.
The fields and woods surrounding St Catherines College and recreation fields provided a well needed and lovely bit of greenery and quiet away from the city.
MOVING FORWARD…
In creativity, things take turns you do not expect them to; but in that process you learn. You learn to appreciate where you came from, even when it hurts. You learn to grow into where you are going, or hope to go at least- even when you are scared. You become determined to move forward.
I am incredibly proud of the collection you see before you. From the initial sketches and historical research to the photography and editing to this very website- it has all been a labor of love and a passion to create and express myself. I had so much fear in revisiting this place that I associate with so many feelings and memories, but I am so satisfied with the result. I am very new to this endeavor as this is only my second collection; but I am finding every season becomes more and more personal, and reaches into me so much more than anticipated.
With this collection I am finally moving onwards and upwards. And I hope you will move with me.
